Erik ten Hag reportedly agrees with Manchester United’s Mason Mount stance as the Premier League giants see a third bid worth £55 million rejected by Chelsea.

Whoever said third time is the charm?

Manchester United’s third and supposedly ‘final’ bid for the England international went the same way as their first two on Saturday night; Chelsea rejecting an offer of £55 million as they hold out for £10 million more.

According to The Athletic, a Blues side who finished a dismal 12th last season want £58 million up front for Mason Mount. Plus a further £7 million in bonuses.

Given that Mount has just one year left on his contract – and has left his current employers in no doubt about his desire to move to Old Trafford this summer – you can see why United are reluctant to meet Chelsea’s rather obscene demands.

Manchester United still hope for Mason Mount deal with Chelsea

Erik ten Hag is a huge fan of Mount; a player who first caught his eye during that Eredivisie loan spell at Vitesse Arnhem back in 2017/18. But he accepts that United should not be bullied in pursuit of a player who could be snapped up for absolutely nothing 12 months down the line.

According to Fabrizio Romano, United have not yet given up on Mount. Their £55 million bid remains on the table. The decision not to ‘overpay’, meanwhile, was one made not just by the United bosses but in conjunction with Ten Hag too.

Given that the former Ajax boss wants a new striker and a new goalkeeper this summer, caving into Chelsea’s demands and stumping up £65 million for Mount would have knock-on effects for United’s hopes of bringing in reinforcements elsewhere during a summer impeded by Financial Fair Play concerns.

“Decision made together with Ten Hag; no chance to overpay,” Romano explains. “United want Mason Mount as he’s showing a strong desire to join.

“United won’t make any unrealistic bid.”

There is still confidence, within Mount’s camp, that a deal between the two clubs will be agreed eventually. The Daily Mail report that Chelsea have offered to meet Man United ‘face to face’ this week in order to thrash out terms; the Red Devils still hoping to get Mount through the door in time for pre-season.
