Five things learned as Manchester United beat Sunderland 2-0

Manchester United claimed all three points on Saturday in a 2-0 win against Sunderland.

It was a must-win game for Manchester United, and Ruben Amorim can walk away from Old Trafford with a smile on his face.

The scoring was opened by Mason Mount in the eighth minute, as he brilliantly converted Bryan Mbeumo’s assist with a perfectly placed strike.

United then made it 2-0 through Benjamin Sesko as he scored a real striker’s goal to convert a long throw, his second in as many games.

From here on, United controlled proceedings, seeing out the game for a much-needed three points.

Here are five things we learned from the game.

Floodgates opening for Benjamin Sesko

Sesko opened his goal account for United last weekend against Brentford, and as expected, this has opened up the floodgates for the Slovenian.

Against Sunderland, Sesko grabbed his second of the season, and it was a true striker’s goal as he converted from short range after a long throw.

Goals in back-to-back games are an excellent way for Sesko to build confidence, and we can only imagine this is just the start.

Mason Mount warrants Manchester United start

There were eyebrows raised when United’s team was announced on Saturday afternoon, with Matheus Cunha surprisingly excluded from the starting 11.

Instead, Amorim favoured Mount, with the number seven proving his head coach right almost immediately as he scored a brilliant goal.

Amorim has always been a fan of Mount, and now the English midfielder might have just guaranteed his place ahead of Cunha in the pecking order.

Senne Lammens is an immediate improvement on Altay Bayindir

Since Senne Lammens arrived at United on transfer deadline day, Manchester United fans have been clamouring to see him replace Altay Bayindir in the team.

Now, just over one month later and this wish has been granted as Lammens started against Sunderland and immediately looked more composed and a safer pair of hands.

No mistakes, high claims, and plenty of good saves have surely established Lammens as the clear number one for United going forward. It would be ludicrous to go back to Bayindir.

Ruben Amorim buys himself more time to turn things around

Coming into this game, only a win would guarantee Amorim would still be in charge in two weeks, and this is exactly what he managed to coach.

Amorim saw his team play to an impressive level, looking very comfortable for most of the game against Sunderland.

In doing so, United will hope that this is finally a corner being turned, with the clash with Liverpool now being a huge opportunity to build momentum.

Ruben Amorim has a massive two weeks coming up

While the win will earn more time for United, it must be time spent adapting the system and team more toward the professional performance seen against Sunderland.

Amorim needs to work on his midfield balance and various other ongoing issues before we can get excited about winning.

Liverpool away in two weeks could be a huge chance for Amorim to get another win, as they are struggling themselves.
